We recently sat down with one of the most popular florists in the Baton Rouge area, Robert Heroman , owner of Billy Heroman’s Flowers & Gifts, to ask him a few questions about the wedding industry when it comes to the floral business.
How much of your business is related to wedding events?
Looking at total flower sales, I would say about 10 percent goes to wedding events.
How much on average would a bride and groom pay for the services of a florist at their weddings?
About $2000, we have a wide variety, some much more and some can be much less.
Would you say flowers at weddings are becoming more or less popular?
I would say more popular due to the Internet and Pinterest in this digital age. It helps the brides create more of what they want for their wedding.
What is the most popular flower brides seem to want in their wedding?
Peony, it has a tight season of April-July. So it is hard to get year round. Since it is so popular, growers all over the world are trying to figure out how to grow year round through multiple climates to meet the high demands. There is a short season in Israel where they can grow peonies. Also, Chile can grow peonies during their winter. There is a grower in Alaska who uses a green house to grow them during one month. We order from these places during the off peak season to meet high demands. We have to pay triple because they are coming from so far away and can be scarce at times.
What are the current floral trends?
Peony as flowers, the color blush for bridesmaids dresses, and some navy and eggplant. Brides are always looking for something unique to mix into their weddings. Some examples are heights of flowers at reception tables, lanterns, and candlelight. Every bride strives to be different. Pinterest and the Internet are so huge for ideas by helping make the wedding unique and different.
Why do you love being a florist?
I love helping our clients bring their ideas to life, and using our skills and visions to bring their thoughts to life through artistic designs and creations. It is very rewarding to see people moved by beautiful flowers everyday.
